If you haven’t guessed already, EvanMoor workbooks are my jam. It covers multiple subjects and most are aligned with the National Standards for the given subject. It helps this Mama to fill in subject matters that need some daily practice.

We are very pleased to receive the Skill Sharpeners Geography Grade 6 for review.

Additionally, I have reviews for Daily Geography Practice Grade 5 and Grade 6 if you are interested.

Workbook

Grade level: This is labeled for 6th grade.

Parent Involvement: Depending on your child(s) abilities it varies.

Schedule: Unlike the EM Daily Geography Series, the EM Skill Sharpeners Geography does not have a schedule. You can customize the workload based on your schedule and/or the kids’ interests.

Setup: Again it is a bit different from the Daily Geography series. In the Table of Contents, the six essential elements of geography are broken down into three units each and the specific topics it covers.

Each unit covers concepts and skills using the following learning tools:
– Reading Passages
– Comprehension Questions
– Visual Literacy (Map Skills practice)
– Vocabulary Practice (pulled from the reading)
– Application (Writing Prompts)
– Hands-on Activities

The book is visually appealing and in FULL COLOR. The maps are full pages and clearly represented. They are labeled neatly and don’t feel overloaded. The questions asked are well written and to the point. The challenge here is knowing the vocabulary and applying your writing skills.

Hands-On Activity

Hands-on project: At the end of every unit, there’s a project; some might be more challenging than others, but all are quality projects. The materials needed are super basic; pens, paper, internet access and maybe a camera. However, the skills applied are not. Your child will practice internet researching, opportunities to practice grammar and mechanics through their writing, and they can even weave in art.

If you choose to, the project alone can be an entire week’s worth of geography work.

Free Resource

FREE: You have free access to the teaching guide for SS Geography Grade 6. Its a really great resource if you want guidance on how to use the book.

Standards: On the Evan Moor website there is a feature that helps educators research whether the books align with your specific state’s standards. Here in my state, there are two (2) standards required and the book covers those two. And just to satisfy my curiosity, I looked up the National Standard and the EM Daily Geography covers all 18 standards! We are going more than enough !!

Table of Content

Below are the six essential elements that highlight the major components of geography:

  • Essential Element 1:The World in Spatial Terms
  • Essential Element 2: Places and Regions
  • Essential Element 3: Physical Systems
  • Essential Element 4: Human Systems
  • Essential Element 5: Environment and Society
  • Essential Element 6: The Uses of Geography

Take a look at the National Geography Standards Index for a more in-depth description of each element.

Overall: It’s thorough, concise, and grade-level appropriate. Further, this is a great resource for families who really enjoy project-based learning.

I hope this review was helpful and if you are interested in checking out their other products, head over Evan-Moor’s website to see their Skill Sharpener Geography collection.
