Its personally important for my family to weave Logic resources into our homeschooling journey. We use The Critical Thinking Co. products as part of our homeschool curriculum.

We started with MindBenders and Building Thinking Skill in our home, so we are so pleased to add Mathematical Reasoning to our homeschool learning.

What is The Critical Thinking Company?

“If we teach children everything we know, their knowledge is limited to ours. If we teach children to think, their knowledge is limitless.”

– Michael Baker, President

From the website, “Since 1958, our award-winning products have helped students of all abilities achieve better academic results with highly effective lessons that sharpen the mind as they teach standards-based reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history. Our products are fun, easy to use, and guaranteed to produce better grades and higher test scores.”

Quick Overview:

  • Grade/Age: 3rd Grade
  • Parent Involvement: It’s meant to be worked alongside your child and depending on your child’s ability, you might be able to assign this as independent review work as well.
  • Schedule: There’s no set schedule. You work at your own pace, but it is suggested to work page by page and in sequence since the topics do spiral.
  • Product Format: We received the physical copy but there is a PDF version on their site.

There are 5 main concepts covering 47 skills. There’s a super helpful Table of Contents that lists the skills by alphabetical order if you choose to use this as a supplement.

What I love about this book is that it emphasizes thinking and reasoning skills. At times, it presents math problems differently than what we are used to so, it gives the student plenty of opportunities to recall math skills from a different curriculum and apply it here.

In addition to her circling the answer, I may ask her to prove her answer by verbally explaining it to me or sketching her answer.

How do we use it?

We use Mathematical Reasoning Level D as a supplement to our main math curriculum. I will assign a few pages a week and review the sheets with her after completion.

Costs

The workbook cost $43, however it is well worth the price, especially if you have multiple kids. You can hand it down from one child to the next by NOT writing in the books and record your answers elsewhere.

Overall Impressions

It is a great comprehensive resource that’s really visually appealing and colorful. Every page is a little different from the last, and challenges the student to stop and think about the problem before solving it.

Math is always fun with color pens!!

I really love the Mathematical Reasoning series so much, that I’m looking to work with my youngest using the Beginning 1 level. He has already been exposed and enjoys the ‘Can You Find Me? Building Thinking Skills’. He will love it!

We are very appreciative of The Critical Thinking Company for allowing us the opportunity to review such a great product.

Happy Homeschooling!
