If you haven’t guessed already, EvanMoor workbooks are my jam. It covers multiple subjects and most are aligned with the National Standards for the given subject. It helps this Mama to fill in subject matters that need some daily practice.
Evan-Moor is my go-to for quality books to enrich our homeschool. We are very pleased to receive the Skill Sharpeners Math Grade 6 for review.
What is Evan Moor Publications?
SInce 1979, Evan-Moor Educational Publishers provides practical, creative, and engaging PreK-8 educational resources to develop basic and complex skills in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and art.
Details
Grade level: This is geared for 6th grade.
Parent Involvement: Depending on your child(s) abilities it varies.
Schedule: Unlike the EM Daily Math Practice Grade 6, the EM Skill Sharpeners Math does not have a schedule. You can customize the workload based on your schedule and/or specific topic review.
Setup: Again it is a bit different from the Daily Math Problem series. In the Table of Contents, each unit covers the same five skills review: Number and Operations, Ratios & Rates, Statistics, Geometry, and Mathematical Reasoning. Additionally, at the end of each unit, there is a single-page Test Review.
There are 10 math units , each with its one theme, covers concepts and skills using the following learning tools:
– Solving Problems
– Place Value
– Patterns
– Fractions
– Measurements
– Money and Time
– Geometric Shapes
– Word Problems
The book is visually appealing and in FULL COLOR. The graphics are large and clearly represented. They are labeled neatly and don’t feel overwhelming. The questions asked are well written and to the point. The Skill Sharpeners Math Activity book requires absolutely no preparation time.
Workload: Because this workbook is to be used as a supplement to your main math curriculum, it won’t explicitly teach your child the math concepts. It assumes you already know the concepts. The workbook should be considered extra practice.

Standards: On the Evan Moor website there is a feature that helps educators research whether the books align with your specific state’s standards, which many find helpful.
Personally, I compared my main curriculum’s TOC with EM Skill Sharpener’s TOC and most topics are covered. So, I intend to us this workbook on days when we are road tripping, visits to grandma and/or on those homeschooling days when we need a break from our main resources.
Overall: The Skill Sharpener Math Series is a helpful resource for families who want to have some math supplements handy. The Skill Sharpeners math series is a fun way to practice math skills. Although the books cover grade-level concepts and align with math standards for education, you may need additional materials to initially teach math concepts.
