With my kids entering upper middle school and High School in a couple of weeks, and knowing we are heading down the path to eventually taking the SATs, I was extra excited to be offered the opportunity to review this vocabulary-building resource from the same company that brought us Typsey Homeschool, Wordela.
As we all know, vocabulary is a major component in reading comprehension, communication, and critical thinking, and it will also increase academic and career success. Although we do paper and pen vocabulary practices, I figured some online extra practice would not hurt.
Online Vocabulary Builder App Review – Wordela Homeschool
Details:
Grade/Age: The platform is used from grades 1st through 12th
With each set of vocabulary lists, you can reinforce learning with:
- Context Clue Reading – Fill in the vocabulary word
- Spelling fill-ins
- Flash Cards
- Zspell Typing Game
Parent Involvement: Minimal. You can either use the already built-in spelling words and/or create your own lists via the parents’ dashboard based on topics you are currently studying, which is how I will be using it alongside Classical Vocabulary or Spelling Workout Books.
Schedule/Lessons: It is as flexible as you make it to be. Seriously. In my case, the “hardest” part would be creating the weekly lists to reinforce learning.
Costs
Wordela has three pricing tiers ( $67, $97 and $197) that provide access to the same information:
- 5 years unlimited access
- Parent-Teacher Admin Accounts (tracking)
- Student Accounts
- Spelling Features
- Vocabulary Features

Our Experience
Practice makes perfect! I really appreciate that I can incorporate our own vocabulary word lists into Wordela Homeschool platform to reinforce learning through games. My kids have done the hard work and created physical flashcards from their vocabulary books and/or Biology textbooks, but using Wordela as an enrichment supplement really helps solidify all the hard learning in a fun, more interactive way.
The Learn Vocabulary Section helps with sentence context reading.
The Learn Spelling Section brings things back to basics by slowing down and sounding out, and scooping syllables. Those vowel pairs can be confusing sometimes.
The Flashcards Section adds images to the vocabulary, which is always helpful for visualization and making connections.
The Review Section provides examples of how to use the words in quality sentences.
The ZSepll Game, the feature they enjoy the most, is a spelling video game (reminds me of an old spaceship and alien game) which reinforces spelling words correctly and helps them type faster and with more accuracy.
The potential is here to be useful in our home, especially since my kids love point-based games and the typing practice is entertaining and fun for them.
Wordela Homeschool is an affordable tool for students to upgrade their command in language, improve their communication skills, and an engaging way to study for challenging subjects like the SATs and the sciences.
So what do you think?
